HOW PROFESSOR KALISH WILL CONDUCT THE LECTURES
Professor developed the course structure and content while teaching at the University of Nebraska. Since retirement, he has adapted the course for an adult non-lawyer audience. Each lecture stands on its own, as well as presenting a coherent overview of the subjects. He has presented all or part of the program in the Osher Life Long Learning program and in continuing education programs.
Professor Kalish teaches by lecture, by discussion and by adult give-and take.
He can easily adapt the focus of his lectures to his audience.
1. If the audience is interested in American history, the course will explore the history "behind the cases."
2. If the audience is interested in the celebrity lawyer, Clarence Darrow, Professor Kalish can emphasize his career.
3. In some cases, the audience might be interested in the "Darrow Myth," developed by Darrow in his autobiography, then by Irving Stone in an important biography, and then in the perfomances of Henry Fonda, Orson Welles, Spencer Tracey, and Kevin Spacey, all of whom played Darrow in popular moves and shows. Professor Kalish can elaborate on the reality behind the myth.
4. Professor Kalish can also compare certain popular movies, including Inherit the Wind and Compulsion. Since both were based on real cases -- the Scopes "Monkey" Trial and Loeb and Leopold "Thrill Killing" case, -- he can explore the accuracy of the movies to the reality.
In all cases, the lectures incorporate slide shows, powerpoint presentations, photos and excerpts from popular movies and important documentaries.
